*Europe in Discourse IV*

*September 26-28, 2024*

**

Last September (23-25, 2022) Europe in Discourse III: Tracing Identity through Values, History and Borders proved to be the focal point where different perspectives about Europe are discussed and disciplines meet to understand those constitutive elements that pull Europe together. As with the previous two Conferences in 2016 and 2018, Europe in Discourse III successfully gathered well-known policy experts, historians, discourse analysts, authors, and public intellectuals with a committed shared interest in Europe and the European Union.

The tradition of the three influential international conferences brought us before the realization that Europe has a long tradition of self-images and foundational elements which it continually needs to draw upon to understand and reform itself. Indeed, the themes discussed during the Conferences, such as values, history and borders reverberate differently across disciplines and across the network of conference participants. Conference discussions, so far, have given new impetus to the discourses of and about Europe but they have also converged in making us understand that to know Europe means to also know the plethora of aspects and elements it represents.

Inspired by the task of making Europe in Discourse a genuinely open conference Europe in Discourse IV deepens the dialogue about Europe by foregrounding an expanded list of elements that constitute it: its cultural and artistic heritage, its historical foundations, the value-driven principles it subscribes to, its borders and geography, and of course the more recent establishment of the European Union as a supranational entity. It will continue to highlight Europe through its foundational mobilizing values and call for further and more expanded discussions to explore the moral orientation of Europe’s citizens. All these elements beg attention to deepen our understanding of what Europe is and see through the paths that it chooses to walk in the future.
