Age Studies and Communication Studies for Social Change
Editors: Virginia Guarinos & Raquel Medina
For years, the different stages of life have become a type of
segmentation for the organization of institutions and many professions.
From the macro-structures of government to private companies, these
stages of life are used in the areas of health, architecture,
psychology, etc.____
COVID-19 has highlighted how both the media and audiovisual fiction have
addressed the older population. Of particular relevance is the
confrontation that has been taking place on social networks between
younger and older generations, with the baby boomers being at the center
of many debates.____
This monograph aims to focus on the representation of older people in
audiovisual communication and to be a forum to consider the image and
the representation of those age groups approaching the last stages of
life.____
This thematic approach can address relevant issues such as____
· the representation of old age in cinema and TV;____
· the creative evolution of long-lived filmmakers with a long
career in terms of themes, plots, concerns, and aesthetics;____
· fictional series aiming to attract older viewers;____
· the representation of the family in TV series;____
· the development of stereotypes and clichés about old age in
audiovisual fiction;____
· the presence and activity of older people in social networks,
as users or influencers;____
· official, public or private experiences for integrating older
people in the media and integrating new technologies into older people's
lives.____
· studies on the representation of aging in entertainment
television programs;____
· audiovisual leisure products aimed at older people (video
games and other therapeutic applications, such as memory games);____
· representations of aging in written and audiovisual
information;____
· older people as consumers of information;____
· specialized information programs or publications for older
people or by older people.____
Gender is a key part of both Communication and Aging Studies, therefore
It is important that all contributions include approaches from either
women's studies, masculinity studies, or LGTBIQ+ studies.
