[Commlist] Live Cinema IV - CFP
Tue Aug 02 12:07:14 GMT 2022
Colleagues may be interested in the CFP for the below hybrid event - the
deadline has been extended until 5th August
Building on the successes of the*Live Cinema Conference*held at King’s
College London in 2016, the*Live Cinema Summit*at Sheffield Doc/Fest
2018*,***and our online event*Live Cinema III: The ReOpening***in
September 2020, we are convening:*Live Xinema*a new festival of research
and innovation exploring the role of hybridity and liveness in the
future of cinema. The Xinemain this year’s title reflects the hybrid
nature of the event (across platforms) and expresses the sense of a
crossroads, of converging and diverging paths of development and innovation.
We are considering three broad areas of enquiry:
* The first is the theme of ‘found and lost audiences’: during the
Global Covid-19 pandemic, many artists, performers and venues turned
to online presentation as a necessity to continue their work, and
consequently while local audiences often shrunk, global audiences,
even for local performances, expanded greatly.
*
The second is new definitions of liveness and presence:this same
period saw the intensification of practices of collective or
simultaneous viewing or experiencing films or other
performances.Since the reopening and the end of social distancing
measures we have seen a return to and an exponential growth in live
immersive experiences.
*
The third is the adoption of new technologies of participation:
spanning the use of mobile devices in auditoria to the full-blown
immersion in virtual environments. What novel aesthetics,
experiences, practices have emerged, how are these shaping audience
expectations and discourses of the future of live and screen-based
entertainment?
As the world returns to a new normal, what lessons are there to learn?
From increasing access physically, socially and financially, to forcing
engagement with new technologies, the response to the pandemic shifted
working practices, the question we are left with is whether they will
simply shift back, or readjust once more to a new model of hybridity
that preserves and enhances the best of both worlds.
To reflect on these issues,*Live**Xinema 2022*will take place in hybrid
form, as a physical event at*Broadway Cinema Nottingham,***and in a new
3D virtual events platform called bubbles.*Live Xinema 2022*will address
artistic and technological advances in the field of live cinema, and
film screenings augmented through live or immersive elements, including
site-specific locations, technological intervention and digital
participation.
The festival will take place over three days from the 21^st to 23^rd
September and will feature cutting edge academic research, master
classes, workshops, a programme of screenings, panels, Q & A sessions
and world premieres of exclusive live events.
We are currently inviting new research contributions for the*academic
programme*, these may take any presentation format; traditional academic
papers, workshops, pre-constituted panels, practice-based contributions,
technical demonstrations and alternative formats are very welcome. We
welcome proposals from a broad range of disciplinary contexts such as
arts and humanities, computer science, social science, leisure studies,
cultural geography, organisation and management studies. We particularly
welcome interdisciplinary enquiries which embrace methodological
innovation. Areas of significant contribution will be focussed on
instances where the live and digital converge and/or diverge in the
formation of new screen experiences.
In all cases, potential contributors should submit a 200-word abstract
and a short 100 biography to (livexinema22 /at/ gmail.com) by 5th August
2022.Decisions will be sent out on 8^th August, 2022.
