*University of Jyväskylä (Finland), August 10–12, 2022
Deadline for abstracts: April 30, 2022***
The research centre for contemporary culture (University of Jyväskylä,
Finland) and The Finnish Association for Culture Studies invite doctoral
candidates and early career post-docs to an international summer school
to be held at the University of Jyväskylä August 10–12, 2022.**
The theme of the summer school is /Affective Communities/.We welcome
early career researchers from all fields of humanities and social
sciences who study emotions, affects, and affective communities with a
cultural studies orientation. More precisely, we invite submissions that
investigate how communities are constructed around contentious topics,
such as nationalism, racism, feminism, climate change, animal rights,
sexuality, or death. Moreover, submissions that discuss polarisation and
hate speech, or the ways these types of oppositional dynamics can be
turned towards reparative and more inclusive forms of community
building, are highly welcomed. **
Possible themes include but are not limited to:**
1. Nationalism, ethno-nationalism, extremism, and populism
2. Racialization and racism
3. Misogyny and anti-feminism
4. Sexuality and relationships
5. Climate change and animal rights
6. Overconsumption and alternative diets
7. Death, dying, and mourning
8. Hate speech and polarization
9. Reparation and inclusivity
The summer school offers early career researchers an opportunity to
receive mentoring and comments for their article drafts on the
aforementioned themes from internationally established cultural studies
scholars. The summer school includes keynote lectures from Peter Hervik
(migration, racism, extreme speech), Olli Löytty (postcoloniality,
otherness, national identity), Kaarina Nikunen (emotions, affects,
social media), and Leena-Maija Rossi (gender, body, intersectionality),
in addition to which the mentors include the University of Jyväskylä
based scholars Tuija Saresma (hate speech, populism, gender,
intersectionality), Heidi Kosonen (taboo, disgust, death, suicide) and
Johanna Turunen (cultural heritage, museums, post- and decolonial theory).**
Based on the article drafts presented during the summer school, the
summer school will yield an article collection with a selection of
contributions from the participants and mentors. It will be published,
preferably open access, by a renowned publisher fall 2023.**
To participate in the summer school, send a short bio, a motivation
letter (max 1 page), and your abstract (c. 300 words) for the article
you wish to write to Johanna Turunen, *(johanna.k.turunen /at/ jyu.fi)
<mailto:(johanna.k.turunen /at/ jyu.fi)>*, by April 30, 2022. The notifications
of acceptance will be sent by May 15, 2022, and the selected
participants will be asked to provide their first article draft (5 to 15
pages ) by June 15, 2022.**
The summer school has a 150 euro registration fee, which will cover
participation, a get-together party, as well as light refreshments,
coffee, and tea. **
