The International Communication Gazette --Special Issue Call for Papers—Abstract Submission Deadline: 12/15/2021 *Transnational consumption and international distribution of Turkish TV series in the new global televisual landscape* Yeşim Kaptan, Kent State University & Ece Algan, California State University, San Bernardino, Guest Editors
 Deadline for Full Papers: 06/30/2022
Expected Date of Publication: Early 2023s
The rise of internet access and widespread use of television streaming technologies and social media have further accelerated global television consumption which had gained an important momentum cultivating transnational tastes and encouraging multidirectional flows since the satellite era. Coupled with a high demand for television content, these developments have enabled Turkish television, which is a lesser-known newly-emerged national media industry, to become a major global player by expanding its regional reach beyond the Middle East, Balkans and its diaspora in Europe. Since the mid 2000s, the Turkish television industry has been among the top five exporters of global TV content (Kaptan and Algan 2020). Although a number of important studies have captured the moment of Turkish TV series’ big breakthrough (Alankus and Yanardagoglu 2016, Algan and Kaptan 2021, Al-Ghazzi and Kraidy 2013, Berg 2020, Rakhmani 2020, Salamandra 2012), the unexpected global popularity of Turkish media products across diverse populations and regions necessitates revisiting audience experiences of emerging transnational content through a new lens that will investigate global and local distribution networks and reception of Turkish TV series and move beyond previous linear theories and models of global television studies. In this special issue, we welcome proposals that explore international distribution, transnational consumption and appeal of Turkish TV series (dizi) in the context of cross- cultural television. We are particularly interested in case studies that treat Turkish TV series as transnational texts, consider the dislocations and discontinuities of media consumption across various cultural contexts, problematize current dynamics of reception between the local, national and global beyond the North-South dichotomy, and analyze audience engagement with Turkish TV productions. We invite contributions from a variety of methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives that explore a range of topics including, but not limited to: • Transnational and translocal audiences of Turkish TV series; cultural affinity, reflexivity, and alternative/multiple modernities • The impact of digitalization of TV, online streaming and convergence on audience experiences
• Online and offline fan communities, fandom, translations and fan labor
• Dynamics of television markets and their implications on global audiences of Turkish TV series in various regions • Cross-border flows, multiple proximities, mediation and audience engagement • Trans/national television distributors’ assessment of their audiences’ demands and responses to Turkish TV series • Audience experiences of race, class, ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ+, religious, national and global identities • The role of public, cable and/or satellite broadcasting regulations and censorship on the consumption of Turkish TV series
• Alternative ways of consuming Turkish TV series and piracy
• Public controversies and reactions around Turkish TV series
• Online audience interactions and digital ethnographies
Please send a 400-word abstract and 150-word bio to the guest editors, Yeşim Kaptan ((ykaptan /at/ kent.edu)) and Ece Algan ((ealgan /at/ csusb.edu)) until December 15, 2021. NO article processing charges (APCs) will be required.
