Description of the event
So far in 2020, there have been protests in the United States, France,
Hong Kong, Indonesia, Lebanon, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. Latin
America has witnessed massive mobilizations of citizens that have forced
profound unprecedented political changes. In Chile, a new Constitution
is underway after the social outbreak that took place a year ago. More
recently in Peru, numerous protests that lasted for a week brought down
a regime that was highly questioned and considered spurious by more than
90% of Peruvians.
What produces this discomfort? What causes these political crises? The
first reflections suggest that were are approaching the end of an era:
the power of sovereign institutions —presidents and ministers,
parliaments and political parties—yield to renewed forms of radical
democracy that are being exercised in the streets, from digital
platforms or through citizen groups that turn into pressure groups.
It is, therefore, the legitimacy of delegation and a representative
democracy that is in crisis. Insofar, the aforementioned political
establishment is being discovered in its schemes of manipulation of the
truth, as students, diverse groups, and associations demand
transparency. This happens, amidst an emotional state of outrage, where
the people demand to restore morality to public management.
What is the role of the press in this scenario? How should it deal with
its mission of public orientation, in the face of so many diverse
voices, with so many divergent interests, and a profusion of accounts,
intentionally and instrumentally biased, by engines of massive
disinformation?
This congress proposes to place at the center of today's discussion the
links between these power scenarios and the media, particularly those of
the social media platforms. The discussion will address the post-truth
regimes in which we are immersed, and how the emerging citizen
mobilizations cope with them, which, from the social media, sustain,
“now we deliver the news.”
Objective of the event
To reflect on the relationship between the press and power in society,
in a ruling post-truth regime and, more specifically, on the challenges
that the political crisis and the boiling of social media impose on
media industry.
