Thu Nov 07 07:13:29 GMT 2019

***CfP Working Group on Culture and War (CSA)*

Cultural Studies Association (USA) 2020 Conference

The Working Group on Culture and War of the Cultural Studies Association invites both general and themed submissions for the 18th Annual Meeting of the Cultural Studies Association (U.S.A.), to be held at Columbia College Chicago, Chicago, Illinois on May 28-May 30, 2020,

_General Call_: We invite interdisciplinary papers, panel proposals, and non-traditional forms of creative intervention that consider the cultural, economic and political landscape of conflict past and present. Multi-/international perspectives are especially welcome. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

·The militarization/securitization of daily life inside/outside conflict zones.

·Collective resistance to militarism and militarized spaces (borders, cities, media).

·Cyber war/security; surveillance and drones.

·The political economy of conflict: “weaponizing” of financial/international institutions, sanctions, privatization of military services; outsourcing security from core to periphery.

·Race, gender and sexuality in war/military organization, including conscription/recruiting, support, combat and command roles.

·Veterans’ issues: military families; veterans’ policy/history/identity; veterans for and against current wars/occupations.

·Construction of civilian war imaginary in war news media and war gaming, as well as literature and film.

·Embodied lessons of war and culture.

_Theme Call_: Consonant with this year’s conference theme, the Working Group also invites papers thematizing “Bodily Sovereignty and Collective Action” in the context of politics, culture and war. Papers/panels could consider:

·Coercive sovereignty and collective/individual resistance to occupying powers.

·States of exception, indefinite detention, torture, and the re-assertion of national sovereignties in the global War on Terror.

·Surveillance and forms of sovereignty exercised within governmentality.

·Conflict and the dispersal of national sovereignty in “sovereignty regimes” and “sovereignty bargaining.”

*Final Deadline for Submissions: Monday, Dec 9, 2019*

Working Group submissions can either be an individual paper (15-20 minutes) or pre-constituted panel. Selected individual papers will be combined into panels at the discretion of the Program Committee. Individual paper proposals must include the title of the paper; the name, title, affiliation, and email address of the author; and an abstract of the paper (<500 words). Both individual and panel submissions must be made through CSA's online EasyChair submission portal. Choose either the Working Group Panel or Working Group Paper tracks, complete the submission information, and choose the appropriate working group from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page: http://www.culturalstudiesassociation.org/workinggroups.

In order to participate in the conference and be listed in the program, all those accepted to participate must register before Friday, May 1, 2020. And remember: registration for the conference and membership in the CSA are separate transactions (and both are required to present).
