Call for papers:

The NODA 2019 academic pre-conference workshop, which will take place in 
Trondheim, Norway on 29th January 2019, invites the submission of 
extended abstracts outlining substantial, original, and unpublished 
research focusing on Data Journalism.

In the Big Data Era the use of information found on the Web is becoming 
increasingly essential to journalism. Nevertheless, the question remains 
as to how this information can be used by journalists. Even though more 
large datasets are being released, such as WikiLeaks and the Afghan war 
logs, and the use of such data is already beyond elite organizations 
(NODA 2018), data journalism remains only a small subset of journalism, 
existing only in precarious forms in newspapers and news 
organizations (Coddington, 2018).

On the other hand, the abundance of fake news, scams and misinformation, 
has initiated research and actions to improve opinion polls and monitor 
and trace the use and origins of junk news and misinformation in 
political elections. Besides, new research on emotions and information 
about users available through several devices provide also new 
opportunities for news personalized systems, which can now be enriched 
and offer readers more diversified and targeted media content.

NODA19 invites papers that address a range of theoretical or 
methodological issues, including but not limited to:

• Artificial intelligence and automation, both in content production and 
distribution;
• New approaches to investigative journalism;
• Personalised or recommended news;
• Extended context: adding psychological constructs such as personality 
and emotions to personalization;
• Challenges in content echo chambers;
• Data analysis;
• Visualisation of news;
• Storytelling in the big data era;
• User experience design and news gamification
• Data literacy;
• Fake news: fact checking and verification practices in data 
journalism, bots, scams and misinformation;
• Potentials and risks of social media profiling;
• The sustainability of data journalism beyond legacy organizations, 
such as hyperlocal data journalism;
• Open data, freedom of information, legislation and data journalism;
• Audience engagement, interaction and consumption of data journalism 
content;
• Data as a value generator;
Cross-disciplinary studies are encouraged to be presented, where 
journalism intersects other research fields such as media, data science, 
artificial intelligence, interaction design, gaming, business 
and administration or political science.

Extended abstracts for papers (500 -750 words, in a Scandinavian 
language or English) can be submitted until November 19th, 2018. The 
abstracts will be peer-reviewed.

Acceptance notifications will be sent out mid-December 2018.
