This is a call for researchers to submit unpublished papers about the uses
of media from an anthropological perspective, with emphasis on analysis of
the content of their messages, their interpretation, and the new social
dynamics that their daily use encourages. Special, but not exclusive,
consideration will be given to research that explores culturally instituted
media rituals: consumption of news and information; audiences of fiction
programs and reality shows; and new socialities that emerge from these,
such as interest lists, fan associations, and user communities with strong
ties and identifications.
Whilst the starting point of this call is media anthropology, we seek
interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies that transcend the
observation of people and their relationship with devices and their
messages (on radio, TV, newspapers or digital environments), to offer a
deeper insight into the social orders and power relationships that these
routines reveal. Thus, topics to consider might include:
- Political anthropology of the media: the state, media ownership, civil
society responses.
- Press, radio, cinema, and TV in the digital age.
-Transnational media flows and cultures.
- Media audience ethnographies, audiences, and case studies.
- Media and social identities (national, gender, religious, ethnic,
subcultural, etc.).
- Social networking sites, such as Facebook or Twitter, and the socialities
that emerge with them.
- Political mobilization, online media and digital citizenship.
- Mobile phones and new ways of participation and relating.
-New practices and media cultures: youtubers, causes, viral and selfies.
Papers will be published in two formats: printed and virtual with open
access.
Papers will be previously submitted to a double-blind review process, with
subsequent return to the authors for their revision and correction based on
the reviewers´ recommendations.
*Papers may be submitted in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Double-blind
peer review will be conducted in the relevant language. If the text is
accepted, it will be necessary for authors of English and Portuguese papers
to provide a translation into Spanish*.
Research works on other topics relevant to the development of anthropology
and the study of the Andean and Amazonian regions are welcome at any time,
as well as reviews of recently published books.
