The Communication Studies Department at Gonzaga University invites
applications for two tenure track Assistant Professors with expertise
in digital media, communication technologies, and culture. We wish to
welcome humanities-based teacher-scholars to join a growing department
with an innovative curriculum grounded in rhetoric, media, and
cultural studies.

We hope for applications from teacher-scholars who adopt a critical
approach to contemporary media and culture. We wish to collaborate
with a colleague who possesses strong pedagogical, theoretical, and
methodological abilities in digital media and culture, with particular
emphasis on linking technologies and their cultural meanings within
and across diverse communities; who explores the impact of digital
media on society, politics, and community; who addresses questions of
diversity, equity, and social justice broadly considered; who
understands communication technology as a constitutive material,
social, cultural, and political endeavor; and who possesses a broad
awareness and appreciation of rhetorical foundations of the discipline
and the areas of research and teaching represented in the Department.

We envision applicants whose teaching and scholarship explore
intersections of digital media and culture with one or more of the
following areas:
• digital citizenship and affective publics
• activism and social movements
• race/ethnicity/gender and media
• civic and global political engagement/disengagement
• surveillance, privacy, and publicity
• immigration
• identity assemblage as impacted by digital media and communication
technologies
• postcolonial theories of digital media

Applicants should be comfortable working in a liberal arts setting
that fosters faculty collaboration and student engagement both inside
and outside the classroom. Thus, we seek a colleague with potential
for interdisciplinary collaboration with departments and programs in
the College of Arts and Sciences such as Women’s and Gender Studies,
Native American Studies, Environmental Studies, International Studies,
as well as emerging minors in Film Studies and Critical Race Studies.
Candidates should also demonstrate potential for contributing to
College of Arts and Sciences initiatives including the Center for
Digital Humanities, The Center for Public Humanities, and the Center
for Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry.

All members of the department contribute to and participate in student
advising, peer review of teaching activities, department assessment
and evaluation, committee work, and special projects. The successful
applicant will be invested in creative pedagogy and curriculum
development. All faculty in the department share responsibilities for
teaching the first-year, Core curriculum course, COMM 100:
Communication and Speech. The teaching load is 18 credits per academic
year.

The Communication Studies Department is committed to inclusive
excellence and to increasing the diversity of the campus community. In
alignment with Gonzaga University’s mission, we expect applicants to
demonstrate a strong commitment to issues of social justice,
diversity, global engagement, and care for/solidarity with vulnerable
and marginalized communities. Candidates who have experience working
with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and who can
contribute to the departmental ethos and campus climate of inclusivity
are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas.
Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to issues applicable to
diverse populations and to working with underrepresented and
minoritized students through teaching, mentoring, or administration
are preferred.
