[ecrea] Loughborough University - ESRC Workshop on Advanced Media Content Analysis

      ‌Workshop on Computer Assisted Gathering and Analysis of Texts in
      Digital Environments

The workshop is held on 20-21 June 2017, in the Department of Social 
Sciences at Loughborough University. It is designed for PhD students and 
it is free of charge. The course is led by Professor David Deacon with 
additional input from Professor James Stanyer and Dr. David Smith.

There is a limited number of bursaries available to cover travelling 
costs for attendants. Please visit the event’s website for eligibility 
and details on how to apply for a place on the workshop [1]. The 
deadline for receiving applications is the 19th of May.

The workshop’s indicative content and structure:

Day 1:

The morning will begin with a reflection of the origins of quantitative 
content analysis, its historical uses and its new challenges. We will 
then offer guidance on identifying and using digital repositories for 
the gathering of traditional media content. We will invite discussions 
about the implications of overdependence upon proxy data when analysing 
legacy media content. As a case study, we will consider the uses and 
limitations of Nexis. Advice will also be given on how to use Boolean 
operators and other techniques in keyword searches. The afternoon 
session will focus on the gathering of online content – e.g. websites, 
blogs and micro-blogs. We will introduce a range of freeware that can 
assist in the harvesting and storage of these materials.

Day 2:

The morning will start with an introduction to principles and procedures 
involved in measuring inter-coder reliability (and computer assisted 
calculation procedures). It will continue with a series of practical 
tasks related to the design and piloting of a coding schedule. The 
remainder of the day will offer guidance on computer aided data analysis 
using SPSS and NVIVO. Different pathways will be offered for those with 
basic and advanced skills in these software.
