The /Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies/ celebrates its 5^th
anniversary (2012-2017) with the international conference /Innovations
and Tensions: Italian Cimema and Media in a Global Context /organized by
Flavia Laviosa (Wellesley College, USA) and Catherine Ramsey-Portolano
(The American University of Rome), in collaboration with Ryan
Calabretta-Sajder (University of Arkansas, USA).
Sponsored by Wellesley College, the publisher Intellect and AUR, and
under the patronage of the Dipartimento di Comunicazione e Ricerca
Sociale –Sapienza Università di Roma, Università della Repubblica di San
Marino, Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) and Associazione Dante
Alighieri, the conference will be held at AUR, on 9-10 June 2017.

The aim of the conference is to foster a debate on post-national cinema
with Italy as a unifying geo-cultural site. 160 speakers from prominent
academic institutions in the Czech Republic, France, Great Britain,
Italy, Malta, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Australia, Canada, New
Zealand, Porto Rico and United States are all committed to elaborate a
multifaceted definition of Italian cinema and media beyond the
boundaries of their (pen)insularity.
A distinctive feature of the conference is the attention on media.
Professor Milly Buonanno (Sapienza Università of Rome) will deliver the
keynote address on Friday 9 June, /Ambigue distanze e incontri
ravvicinati tra la televisione e il cinema in Italia./
The themes discussed at the conference include: the past and future of
RAI, Italian and foreign TV series, web series, post-colonial
intermediality, transmedia, social networks and video games, cinema and
the electronic arts, Paolo Sorrentino’s cinema, LGBTQ cinema and media,
transnational identities, international co-productions, the influence of
Italian cinema on international cinema, cinema and politics, violence
against women, women’s violence, Anna Magnani, auteur cinema, cinema
genres, Italian film festivals in the world, cinema and the arts,
fashion, beauty and celebrities, subtitling and dubbing, cine studios
and archives.
The conference will also include the screening of /Blaxploitalian 100
Year of Blackness in the Italian Cinema/ (2016), by the Italian-Ghanaian
fillmmaker Fred Kuwornu, on Saturday 10 June.
Founded and edited by Flavia Laviosa and published by Intellect,
/Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies/ is the first leading
English-language forum for theoretical, methodological and critical
debate on Italian film and media production, reception and consumption.
