Warwick Summer School Course - 'Discourse in Society: analysing text and
talk'
23.07.2017-04.08.2017
London
About the course: 'Discourse in society: analysing text and talk'
How do people communicate and make meaning as members of social groups?
This is a question that has researchers have recourse to the theories
and methods of Discourse Studies. Discourse can comprise text, talk as
well as non-linguistic resources (such as images) and it designates the
uses that is made of them in certain contexts. By studying discourse, we
can learn how language is used to construct identities, exercise power,
and represent social realities. Discourse analysis often deals with
contemporary questions, such as discrimination of minorities in
political communication (e.g. hate speech), the representation of social
groups in the media (e.g. women in newspapers), the negotiation of
identities in institutional settings (e.g. language and power in schools).
The workshop presents various perspectives on discourse with a
particular focus on qualitative and quantitative methods. It will enable
the participants to work on large or small collections of texts from
corpus analysis to conversation analysis. There will be a chance for
participants to engage with material such as newspaper articles,
interviews or conversations. The course will deal with language in its
intricate articulations with politics, gender and education.
The course level is equivalent to an undergraduate degree at
intermediate level.
