[ecrea] cfp: The Worlds of Violence and Discontent

Thu Aug 25 19:32:10 GMT 2016

Second Conference of the Cyprus Association of Political Science
(Cyprus University of Technology, 16-17 December 2016)

The Worlds of Violence and Discontent

Abstract:

We live in a world of considerable violence and discontent. People experience different forms and degrees of violence – physical, structural, symbolic, genocidal, terrorist, racist, sexist, environmental, ethnic, religious, and so on. They also experience and need to respond to different states of discontent – poverty, abjection, insecurity, lack of hospitality, denial of rights, loss of community, habitat deprecation, and so on.

Our understanding of violence has had to navigate the dialectic of continuity and change. On the one hand, the continuity of violence in its many forms and degrees has been a constant in the history of organized society and political units. On the other, change as variation in these perennial manifestations has presented academics, decision-makers, and the informed general public with exegetic puzzles and challenges. Has the nature of violence and of discontent been fundamentally altered by major shifts in global affairs: the end of the Cold War, the rise of non-state actors, the shifting powerbase of the international system? Has globalization eroded sovereignty to the point where our traditional notions – and analytical tools – of institutional structure are no longer adequate in addressing the needs of our contemporary environment? Do violence and discontent coexist with peaceful means of transformation, as well as less overt means of coercion in the international system?

The 2nd CAPS conference is aimed at the exploration and assessment of the nexus between the multiple manifestations of violence and discontent, as well as an understanding of the evolving dynamics of these phenomena both contemporary and historical. This call for proposals invites the submission of papers that seek to engage the policy, conceptual and ethical issues that these multiple worlds create.
