[ecrea] Call for Proposals: Opacity and Communication

We are proposing a panel on the topic of Opacity and Communication for
the National Communication Association conference, November 10-13, 2016
in Philadelphia, PA.

By opacity we mean a state between visibility and invisibility (or
visibility and obscurity), the exposed and the hidden. Baudrillard once
described a world where everything dissolves in an ecstasy of
communication and information; everything is known, exposed, visible and
there is no more privacy or secrecy. As a response to these societies of
control, Gilles Deleuze proposed creating vacuoles of noncommunication,
or becoming imperceptible.  In response to the binary ways that this
problem gets posed, we propose an in between: the opaque—visible to some
extent, obscure in others, at the edge of perceptibility.  In a field
such as communication studies, founded on notions of the clarity of
transmission and the obscurity of noise, what is the role of the opaque,
the partial?
