The Advances in Psychology, Mental Health, and Behavioral Studies (APMHBS) book series presents comprehensive research publications focusing on topics relating to the human psyche, cognition, psychiatric care, mental and developmental disorders, as well as human behavior and interaction. Featuring diverse and innovative research, publications within APMHBS are ideally designed for use by mental health professionals, academicians, researchers, and upper-level students.



Introduction

Seduction is usually regarded as a natural part of the male/female process, and it is associated with the idea of deceit. This concept has a wide range of figurations and applications in cinema, theater, and literature. The main goal here will be to expand this natural understanding of this thematic concept, showing its multiple range and variety of approaches in the philosophical, psychological and artistic perspectives.

The book “Seduction in Popular Culture, Psychology, and Philosophy� aims at gathering a collection of academic essays that could cover different areas and forms of access to the topic, in the attempt to show the strength, as well as the complexity, of a concept that is part of everyone's daily life. This book looks to discuss this vast notion in three main domains:

a) Philosophy. How was this concept addressed in the history of philosophy? This means different authors and fields of investigation. Is there a more vital impact of the concept in Rhetoric than in Political Philosophy? Or is it mainly a moral concept? From Quintilian to Nietzsche, Plato and Baudrillard, there is a wide platform of reflection that should not discourage original contributions. Seduction, and more specifically seduction intended as manipulation and enticement (to lead away, to lead astray), plays a crucial role in rhetoric and ethics. What is the boundary between persuasion and manipulation? What counts as deceit and what is a legitimate and acceptable persuasion process? Ethical and logical issues are involved in defining this subtle and often tricky line. The analysis of both philosophical and rhetorical approaches to this issue, and the investigations in the area of fallacies and visual argumentation can shed light on this topic.

b) Popular Culture. The history of cinema is full of seducers. Some are more evident than others. The challenge is to question the films, series, theater, literature or authors, departing form the concept of seduction. All the possible interpretations, its amplitude and connections, will allow to enlighten the concept as art, as seduction itself could be interpreted as a form of art. All aesthetics perspectives are welcome.

c) Psychology. The strict interpretation would be related to sex, relationships, or in the extreme related to Psychosis, trauma and desire. However, the focus of the book is much wider, as it is intended to address also the psychological mechanisms triggered by manipulation (including verbal and visual), psychological perspectives, as well as psychiatric studies. We would like to invite also critical studies that can contribute to a better understanding of crucial social issues related to persuasion and manipulation through advertising and technology.



Objective of the Book

The concept of Seduction is something of daily use but that has not been addressed in terms of its multiplicity in the academic field. It’s a general concept that has multiple access doors that we intend to bring to the general public, and specifically to the academic one, in a systematic and condensed proposal that could be a referential title for those who wish to study this concept. This means building a reference anchor, which would have excellence as its main principle. In a certain sense, the idea is to transform this book in a mandatory starting point of study. From Philosophy to politics and cinema, starting in Psychology and dealing with clinical problems, the general goal would be to give the readers a broader perspective of the topic.



Target Audience

Since there is nothing published that one could compare to, this book would constitute a reference title in terms of academic research. The book could most probably become one of those titles that would easily become a reference title in any academic research in the concept area. Due to its multidisciplinarity and academic range, the general potential impact could be:

Academic community; students, teachers, researchers (main target)

Social sciences, communication and rhetoric

Advertising and marketing

Cinema/Critics/Aesthetic community

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before February 28, 2015, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by March 30, 2015 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by June 30, 2015. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Seduction in Popular Culture, Psychology, and Philosophy. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process.
