CALL FOR PAPERS

³Can we live together, equal and different?² So asked
Alain Touraine (1998) in an essay which challenged conventional,
socio-centric approaches
to inclusion and exclusion, equality and difference, diversity and
multiculturalism. Using a concept of common good as a main criterion for
evaluating human conduct, indeed, does not capture a structural context
within which
group competition reinforces ethnic, class, religious, gender boundaries.
Neither does it shed light on the discrepancy between grand policy
narratives ­
social inclusion, community cohesion, or big society, on the one hand, and
the reality
of social fabric breaking along these lines on the other.

The idea of the inclusive society ­ a society based on equality of
opportunities
and the equal capacity of all members regardless of differences of race,
ethnicity, faith, religion, language, gender, social status,
(dis)abilities or
sexual orientation ­ fills policy documents, but does it work across the
world?
And how a Œwider social interest¹ manages and relates to social situations
when
Œequal¹ and Œdifferent¹ collide?

When it comes to the media realm, how does the concept
of the inclusive society operate, where does it go once it comes out of
normative framework, how is it transported, reflected, negotiated and
created
in the media and by the media? Most importantly, in the world of news
media, what
is journalism¹s contribution to these processes? If the operational
definition
of the inclusive society claims it is a society for all and of all, can we
use
the term Œinclusive journalism¹ to discuss journalism for all and of all?

The thematic issue of the Journal of Applied
Journalism and Media Studies aims to engage in a critical dialogue both
journalism
and inclusive society. It invites contributions on the object, nature and
mode of inquiry on inclusive
journalism, its possible definitions, its varieties of forms, its context
of
operation, its understanding by audiences, and its interactions with the
wider
fields of power. The special issue posesthe question of how the fast
changing world of journalism relates to the
old question of its ability to challenge hegemonic notions of inequality
under
the rubric of social diversity.

Papers that address theoretical and
methodological issues in the study of journalism and the inclusive society
might refer to but are not limited to the following topics:



* Journalism and the inclusive global order;

* Journalism and human
     rights/journalism as a human right;

* Journalism and forms of social
     exclusion;

* Journalistic discourse about inclusion;

* Journalism and social inequality;

* Reporting on multicultural policy;

* News and the
     neoliberal rhetoric of diversity;

* Journalism
     and the diversity of voices in public domain



Papers are expected to be conceptually relevant to the comparison of
historical and
political contexts, and to cultural and institutional settings.


Contributions from both academics and practitioners are welcome.


Abstracts: Abstract should not exceed 250 words and should be sent to the
guest editor Verica Rupar ((verica.rupar /at/ aut.ac.nz)) by end of April 2015


Full papers: Full papers should be submitted by end of December 2015
