Call for Papers

Communication for Peace

The relationship between communication and peace is comprised of several distinct aspects, including (among many others) the way in which peace and attempts to build peace are (or are not) reported by the news media; the role of local media in threatening and bolstering peace, democracy and good governance; and the forms of communication beyond journalism, including film and theatre, as well as a plethora of services and applications using mobile and online technologies.

As a subject this complex nexus thus ought to be analyzed not only from the perspective of the legacy media, or limited to the examination of journalism, but also from a number of other vantage points, including the legal frameworks that regulate media landscapes (especially in post-conflict societies), policies and normative frameworks that inform information interventions and communication strategies of major actors within peace and conflict, alternative and newly emerging forms of communication, and the effects of communication on audiences.

Some of these aspects have been explored in the literature more extensively than others. Much research to date has focused on the role of communication in dealing with conflict escalation and crisis intervention, but little on issues of de-escalation of conflict and peacebuilding, despite widespread recognition of its importance. Equally as importantly, there have been few attempts to tie these threads together to describe the relationship between communication and peace in a more comprehensive manner.

As such, in addition to contributions focusing on peace journalism, we hope to encourage participants to submit proposals that study also other aspects of the intersection between communication and peace, bringing together relevant, but so far usually isolated streams of research to contribute to the emergence of a more integrated research agenda.

Such contributions could for example address one of the following topics:

· News coverage and peace

· Discourse and cultures of peace

· Public information of peace operations

· The use of Outcome-oriented media for peacebuilding

· Media and conflict prevention

· Re-building post-conflict media

· ICT for peace

· Community Theatre for Peace

· Citizen media initiatives for peace

Contributors are invited to submit a title and a 250-word abstract by February 16 2014
