[ecrea] CFP in edited collection: "DJ Culture in the Mix Power: Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music"

Thu Aug 25 10:39:18 GMT 2011

DJ Culture in the Mix
Power, Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music

Contributions are sought for an interdisciplinary collection of original essays focused on DJ cultures, expanding on the special DJ-culture issue of 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture'<http://dj.dancecult.net/index.php/journal/issue/view/4/showToc>.

In order to stimulate a rich understanding of DJ cultures, this edited volume aims to bring such scholarly activity together by specifically addressing technological, commercial and power dynamics in DJ practices and their position in wider socio-historical processes. In doing so, it aims to inquire into DJ cultures from a variety of perspectives, such as:
- DJ-techniques and performativity in the context of mechanical and digital mediation;
- Discursive production of subjectivities in the form of spirituality, sexuality or gender dynamics;
- Social identities and cultural (re)mix in global dance music contexts;
- Political economies of DJ cultures and practices.

To contribute, please send a 300-word abstract of your proposed chapter by 30 September, 2011, to:

- Dr Bernardo Attias (Department of Communication Studies, CSUN, US)<(bernardo.attias /at/ csun.edu)>
- Dr Anna Gavanas (Institute for Future Studies, Sweden)<(anna.gavanas /at/ framtidsstudier.se)>
- Dr Hillegonda C. Rietveld (Centre for Media and Culture Research, LSBU, UK)<(h.rietveld /at/ lsbu.ac.uk)>

Selections will be made by 31 October, 2011, and the first chapter drafts will be expected by 1 March 2012.
