[ecrea] Peripheral Visions: Suburbs, Representation and Innovation - Conference 17-18 June

The Centre for Suburban Studies is pleased to announce a forthcoming conference which will take place at Kingston University London on 17-18 June entitled Peripheral Visions: Suburbs, Representation and Innovation. It will be the largest conference ever held in the UK to explore suburban representation, bringing together scholars from over thirty-five institutions from around the world to discuss suburban contexts spanning six continents.

Plenary speakers include:
Prof. Rob Shields (University of Alberta)
Dr Jo Gill (University of Exeter)
Prof. Carrie Tarr (Kingston University)

Topics under discussion include:
• Transnational peripheries
• Suburbs and ordinariness
• Gender and sexuality in suburban fictions
• Suburbs and nostalgia
• Suburban communities and cultural practice
• Architecture, planning and power
• Suburban garden spaces
• Ethnicity and nationhood at the periphery
• Art and design as cultural intervention

There will also be exhibits of delegates’ film, photography and design work.
