Call for Papers:
World War II and the Media
22nd June, 2011
Warrington Campus, University of Chester
Seven decades on, media representations of World War II remain at
the heart of debates about the nation. This one-day conference at
the University of Chester's Warrington campus is intended to address
both contemporaneous coverage of the conflict, and its portrayal in
present-day media. 'World War II and the Media' aims to take an
inter-disciplinary approach to the study of both factual and
fictional representations. It is open to researchers from across the
media and cultural studies in the broadest sense, with applications
encouraged from those working in the areas of journalism, film,
radio, photography, popular music, media history and popular memory.
Papers focusing on international perspectives, both historical and
present-day, would be particularly welcome.
Possible themes include:
WWII and national identity,
The BBC at war,
Contemporaneous press reportage,
Wartime censorship,
Oppositional/dissenting voices,
Literary journalism,
Wartime images and films,
The popular press and WWII,
