Digital Diasporas:
Migration, ICTs and Transnationalism

January 13 -14 2011

Convener: Mirca Madianou (Department of Sociology and Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge)

New developments in digital media combined with a collapse in the cost of international communication are together transforming the experience of migration with implications for family life, sociality and intimacy, identity and political involvement. Through a series of panels and presentations, this interdisciplinary conference will assess the impact of digital media on the following aspects of migration: representation, visibility and participation; culture and identities; family separation; social life; patterns of migration and policy implications. The conference will also provide an opportunity to reflect on ?the digital? and what is new about new media. The conference is co-funded by CRASSH and the ESRC as part of the research grant on Migration, ICTs and Transnational families.
