Media and Journalism Studies at AU
The Department of Media and Journalism Studies carries out research and teaching in the field of Danish and international media with the focus on interaction between the following core areas: institution, production, text and recipients/users. The analytical focus is placed on textual and audiovisual forms of expression, production, journalism, media use, media history and media theory, as well as on political, sociological, financial, technological and institutional factors. The field of study consists of both traditional mass media and digital forms of expression, as well as the interaction between them. Our research adopts a wide variety of theoretical and methodical approaches to media in a broad sense by examining the function, organisation and forms of expression of media in current and historical, cultural and social contexts of a national and international nature. The environment at the department is characterised by extensive participation in cross-institutional national and international research projects, established international research networks and international conferences.

The Department of Media and Journalism Studies is part of the School of Communcation and Culture, which conducts research programmes and study programmes across a variety of fields: e.g. media and journalism studies, information, IT and design studies, language and cognition studies, literature(s), Scandinavian studies, Western European languages and cultures as well as the arts and aesthetics. The position
The successful applicant is expected to strengthen the department’s international research profile with regard to central aspects of at least two of the core areas outlined above (institution, production, text and recipients/users). The successful applicant is also expected to collaborate with the department’s researchers, contributing at a high international level to course development and research regarding current social, cultural, technological, financial, legal and/or political changes and challenges in the media field. The successful applicant is expected to focus on the interrelationship between various features/aspects in the media system, for instance between production and distribution or between media texts and media use; and is expected in this connection to contribute clearly and substantially to the development of theory in the field of media studies. Applicants are expected to present a strategy for how they can contribute to the department’s research and education profile, including the way in which their research is relevant in an international perspective.

Research
The successful applicant is expected to take part in and lead major externally financed research projects, and to be a driving force in the development of new national and international research networks.

Teaching
Applicants must possess supervision competences at all levels from Bachelor to PhD, and must be actively involved in the development of courses and degree programmes. The successful applicant must be able to teach a number of courses on the BA and MA degree programmes in media studies, the MA degree programme in journalism, the MA degree programme in journalism, media and globalisation, and/or the supplementary subjects in journalism and film and media respectively.

Talent development
The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the recruitment of PhD students, in developing and conducting PhD courses, and in promoting the academic development of junior researchers (PhD students, postdocs, assistant professors).

Knowledge exchange
Applicants are expected to take part in knowledge exchange with relevant media organisations and institutions as well as society as a whole in relation to the research areas in question.

Qualifications
In extension of the tasks outlined above, applicants for the professorship will be expected to document the following:

- Significant research publications demonstrating an international research profile at the highest level within central aspects of at least two of the department’s established core areas. - Extensive experience of participation in major externally financed research projects, and experience of research management. - Teaching and supervision competences from BA to PhD level as well as active contributions to the development of courses and study programmes. - It will be considered an advantage if applicants can document experience of knowledge exchange activities and participation in national and international councils, boards or committees.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.

If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be required to acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis.
