Female Authorship in Documentary: Issues and Approaches


This is a CFP for a workshop that will be proposed for Visible Evidence 
2017 in Buenos Aires.


This workshop will bring together documentary scholars and practitioners 
to discuss issues and approaches in female authorship of documentary 
images. It will explore the possibilities, scope and limits of female 
authorship in documentary media. The workshop is motivated by the 
following questions:

— What possibilities of knowledge and meaning does female authorship of 
documentary offer?
— What aesthetics strategies are used for articulating women's 
experiences and concerns through documentary?
— How do documentaries contest, complicate or reinforce the 'gaze' 
towards female subjects?
— How can we appreciate the woman's autobiographical in documentary media?

We invite presentation proposals that address one or more of these 
questions. The workshop will include short presentations (12-15 mins) by 
participants. Each participant will be paired with another participant 
who will serve as respondent questioning and commenting upon the 
presentation. At the end of all presentations the workshop organisers 
will lead discussion on key issues and themes raised in the workshop. As 
this is a workshop, presentations that share works-/research-in-progress 
(written or media-based) are especially encouraged.

Abstracts of 300 words, a biographical note of 100 words and a five-item 
bibliography, should be emailed by 10th October 2016 to workshop organizers:

The workshop organizers will make decisions and propose the workshop for
