[ecrea] cfp 22nd International Conference of ,Europeanists

Wed Oct 01 21:53:56 GMT 2014

--------------------------------------------------------
Panel organized in the framework of the 22nd International Conference of
Europeanists (Council for European Studies) that will take place in
Paris from 8th to 10th July 2015.

TITLE OF THE PANEL : The futures of European political communication and
EU-media relations

In recent years, as the crisis hit Europe much of scholarly interest has
been directed towards studying its causes and consequences. Issues
related to European communication and transformation of EU-media
relations have been somewhat sidelined in some circles. Still, a rich
literature keeps flourishing on this matter. Those topics are crucial
when one is to understand the potential futures of European integration.
In line with the overall theme of this CES Conference, substantial
contradiction exists in the debates about the role communication plays
in the European project. It is seen as both a cause and a solution of
the alleged democratic and legitimacy deficit of the European Union that
has gone deepening with the economic crisis.

The panel looks for papers that are dealing with continuity and change
in European political communication. Its aim is to pinpoint some of the
new trends but also ongoing practices and logics. A variety of topics
from a large array of disciplines (political science, communication,
anthropology, sociology etc.) can be addressed in the individual papers.
They should share the common interest in European communication and
EU-media relations and may deal with different actors and institutions,
strategies, values, formal and informal practices involved in the
processes of formulation/implementation of EU communication policies
directed towards media or in the elaboration and production of EU news.
The development of new technologies made EU’s communicational activities
shift progressively towards more direct forms of contact with
stakeholders and citizens. However, media relations remain in the heart
of EU communication. Contributions studying the EU’s relation to and the
role of both traditional and new types of media will be welcomed.

To join this panel send your paper proposal composed of paper title, 250
words abstract and short bio (toasobotov /at/ ulb.ac.be) by 7 October.

Please feel free to circulate this call.
