Mon Jan 06 20:45:04 GMT 2014
CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference:
‘Media and Crises: The Art of Manipulation and Propaganda’
Date: 29-30 April 2014
Venue: Ibn Khaldoun Hall, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar
Why this conference?
This international conference on “Media and Crises: The Art of
Manipulation, Distortion and Propaganda” comes at a time of widespread
turmoil and conflicts in many parts of the world where news reporting
and media coverage are in many cases characterized by censorship,
disinformation, propaganda and manipulation. The international community
is witnessing a conflict of cultures, stereotyping, racism, and hatred.
In the midst of the escalating war in Syria, the current developments in
the Arab Spring countries, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the ‘War on
Terror,’ to name a few of the international events, journalism practice
is yet again under fire.
This conference brings together academics, journalists, policy makers,
researchers and civil society organizations to discuss the discrepancies
in media coverage of wars and conflicts, and the dilemma news
organizations are going through in abiding by the ethics of journalism
practice. The conference will provide a forum to investigate how world
media have been covering conflicts in the region and beyond. It will
debate media anarchy and unethical practices that characterize
journalism throughout the world while reporting conflicts, wars and
crises. It will also seek to discuss the views of media professionals
concerning the crisis of the media during wars and conflicts. The event
will also address the relationship between journalists, politicians, the
military and the media moguls. It will revisit few of the classic
questions such as: Do news organizations just report facts, or have few
of them become agents in social change? What type of pressure are news
organizations subject to while reporting conflict? Have news media
become part of wars, crises, conflicts and revolutions? Have they been
employed as a means of manipulation, disinformation and propaganda
instead of being sources for reporting reality? Can we speak any more
about a journalism practice based on impartiality, objectivity and
neutrality in reporting the world?
