[ecrea] Call For Papers - Chinese cinema

Sat Jan 04 00:21:08 GMT 2014

The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies is compiling a special edition on current trends in Chinese Cinema, following on from the Post Olympics Chinese Cinema Symposium held at the Bader International Study Centre this past December. The IAFOR, conjointly with The BISC will be releasing a special edition on Chinese cinema in mid 2014 and we are currently looking for article submissions. Articles can be on any topic relating to Chinese cinema studies, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and the cinema of the Chinese diaspora.

Contemporary China, since that watershed period, is continuing to ease restrictions on communication laws and technologies and while Facebook has yet to be permitted in China, there are localized social networking and micro-blogging systems that allow for some commentary on the Chinese political structure. There is similarly a relaxing of censorship in contemporary filmmaking practice, providing filmmakers room to critique perceived inequities in the political economy.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

The Demise of the Sixth Generation
	Digital Technologies and Spectacular Epics
Cantonese Language Cinema and Local Identities
	WuXia Then and Now
	Embracing Humour
From Social Tendency to a Tendency for the Social
	Remakes and Adaptations
	Rural Identities
	The Northern Identity
	Contested Identities
	Martial Arts Epics
	Nostalgia and the Imagined Past
	Blockbuster Aesthetics
	Genre Bending

Please note the following guidelines

Submission Guidelines for the Open-Call Peer Reviewed Papers
IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies
The IAFOR Journal of Asian Studies is a progressive new journal that welcomes scholarship from the late twentieth century into what is being called the Asian Century. It aims to explore social, economic, political and cultural trends in the growing connectivity across cultures in Asia. The cultural citizenship that is evolving from this convergence of cultures embraces a regional empathy and conviviality of harmony, or hybridism. The journal is interested in presenting views on cultural mobility, cultural arbitration and understanding, citizenship beyond borders, migration and identity (national, cultural and diasporic), media trade, national branding, ‘soft-power competition’ and popular culture. It is peer reviewed and aims to give a voice to scholars considering a wide range of emerging aspects of Asian studies.
