Call for extended abstracts - Women in politics and the media in emerging democracies.

Edited by Maria Raicheva-Stover and Elza Ibroscheva

While existing research on American, British, Scandinavian and Canadian women politicians provides us with some evaluation of the advances women have made in Western democracies, we still have a very limited understanding of women's participation in the political systems of emerging democracies. Even less scholarly attention has been given to the intersection of media and women's political power in those societies. This edited volume, therefore, seeks to explore an under-investigated and under-theorized aspect of the media, politics and gender dynamics in hopes of de-Westernizing gender studies on politics and media.

To achieve this goal, the authors wish to assemble a diverse collection of 1) research essays and 2) testimonies addressing the aforementioned dynamics in the emerging democracies of Latin America, North Africa, Sub Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe as well as the former Soviet republics. Comparative and inter-disciplinary examinations are welcome.

1. Chapter proposals: We are particularly interested in examinations that explore, but are not limited to, the complex dynamic of women in politics (including women politicians, First Ladies and activists) and media. Possible topics of exploration include:

o quantity and quality of coverage
o traditional and new media venues
o visual representations
o women in politics and popular culture
o women politicians as celebrities
o public and private spheres of politicians' lives
o women politicians/activists and access to media
o the political economy of gender in the newsroom
o campaign advertising of/about women politicians

2. Testimonies: In addition to original research essays, the authors also seek proposals to interview prominent women involved in the political arena of an emerging democracy. We are particularly interested in proposals that give voice to women politicians or activists who have become trailblazers in their respective countries.

We are currently seeking extended abstracts, between 500-800 words, adhering to the following format: • Title page with: working title, full name of author(s), affiliation and contact information • An abstract describing the purpose and scope of study, including research questions, theoretical approaches and method. • If you are submitting a testimony proposal, please list the name of the person you would like to interview together with a short overview of the impact that person has had in her country. Also, indicate if the interview will be conducted in English or a native language.

Finished chapters should be between 8,000-10,000 words including references and notes. The working title is listed above. A publisher has expressed interest in the volume.

REVISED schedule:

Notification of accepted papers: November 30, 2012
First draft of chapters due: March 1, 2013
