Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Programme: Spaces, Connections, Control
Inaugural Symposium:

Media, Diversity and Cosmopolitanism in Europe

Saturday 28 November 2009, 9:30 ? 17:30
Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre
Goldsmiths, University of London

This one-day symposium facilitates a discussion on diversity and cosmopolitanism in Europe within the context of media and European media policy. The role of media and media policies in the construction of individual and collective identities has been widely explored and often studied within the context of nation states. The speakers at the symposium will address the relationship between media (and media policy) and diverse European populations within frameworks that are invariably overlooked in mainstream academic and policy research.

The two main themes of the symposium are cultural diversity and complexity in relation to media (and media policy); and cosmopolitanism. Speakers discuss a variety of phenomena occurring on the ground in Europe, such as transnational migration and pan-European media spheres (e.g. Roma/Gypsy and Catholic ones), and question nation-centric approaches to media and socio-cultural phenomena in Europe.

The keynote lecture is delivered by Zygmunt Bauman and other speakers include
Asu Aksoy (Goldsmiths), Connie Christiansen (Roskilde University), Adrian Favell (University of California, Los Angeles), Aniko Imre (University of Southern California), Timea Junghaus (Arts and Culture Programme, Open Society Institute, Budapest), Monika Metykova (Goldsmiths), Kevin Robins (Goldsmiths), Katharine Sarikakis (University of Leeds) and Ksenija Vidmar Horvat (University of Ljubljana).

Places are strictly limited. To book a place please email Elisabeth Baumann-Meurer at <mailto:(e.baumann-meurer /at/ gold.ac.uk)>(e.baumann-meurer /at/ gold.ac.uk) There will be no charge for this event.
