[ecrea] Study on Indicators for Media Pluralism in the Member States: Invitation to the stakeholder workshop (Brussels, CCAB, 8 June 2009)

Thu Apr 30 08:32:52 GMT 2009

Dear all,

The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (<http://law.kuleuven.be/icri/>ICRI-IBBT), in partnership with Jönköping International Business School (<http://www.ihh.hj.se/mmt/>JIBS-MMTC), Central European University Budapest (<http://www.cmcs.ceu.hu/>CEU-CMCS), Ernst & Young Consultancy Belgium and subcontractors from various Member States, has been completing a study for the European Commission, DG Information Society and Media, on "Indicators for Media Pluralism ? Towards a Risk-Based Approach".

This study forms part of the European Commission?s <http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/media_taskforce/pluralism/index_en.htm>three-step approach for advancing the debate on media pluralism within the European Union. The approach was launched in January 2007 with a <http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/media_taskforce/doc/pluralism/media_pluralism_swp_en.pdf>Commission Staff Working Paper and will culminate with a Commission Communication on media pluralism indicators in due course. The objective of our study was to develop a monitoring tool for assessing media pluralism in the EU Member States and identifying threats to such pluralism based on a set of indicators, covering pertinent legal, economic and socio-cultural considerations. The outcome of this study is a prototype for a European Media Pluralism Monitor.

We would like to invite you to the stakeholder workshop where the study team will present the findings and conclusions of the study, as contained in the Preliminary Final Report, the prototype of the Media Pluralism Monitor and its User Guide, for discussion by stakeholders, including Member State officials, regulators, industry representatives and non-governmental organisations.

The workshop will thus be an opportunity for stakeholders across the European Union to express their opinions on the study?s findings and the functioning of the Media Pluralism Monitor. These views will contribute to the formulation of conclusions and recommendations in the final report.

The workshop will take place in Brussels, on Monday 8th June, 2009 (10 am ? 5 pm), in the Albert Borschette Conference Centre in Rue Froissart 36, room AB-0D. Simultaneous translation will be provided in three languages (EN, FR and DE).

More details are available from the European Commission's and IBBT?s websites via this link: <http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/media_taskforce/pluralism/study/index_en.htm>http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/media_taskforce/pluralism/study/index_en.htm, such as:

-          Practical details for the workshop;

-          Online registration (deadline: June 1st, 2009);

-          Electronic copies of the Preliminary Final Report and its annexes;

- An evaluation / feedback form for providing comments to the study team (to return before June 10th, 2009 to <mailto:(mediapluralism /at/ law.kuleuven.be)>(mediapluralism /at/ law.kuleuven.be)).

Please be aware that places for the workshop are limited, so we advise you to confirm your attendance as soon as possible. If necessary, participants will be accepted according to the order in which the registration has been made and/or participation will be limited to one representative per organisation. DG INFSO is unfortunately unable to cover costs related to the participation in the workshop.

You will receive an official invitation/acceptance of your registration the week before the workshop, together with a detailed agenda for the day.

The workshop will also be streamed live online via the web (the link will be made available a few days before the workshop).

The study consortium looks forward to meeting you at the workshop, or welcoming you as a member of our online audience.

Kind regards,

Peggy Valcke (project leader)
