We are pleased to extend to you an invitation to
participate in the Media & Nationalism Doctoral
Summer School 2008 in Vic, Barcelona (Spain),
which will be held from 7th to 11th July 2008.

The Doctoral Summer School on the Media &
Nationalism will bring together members of the
Catalan, Basque, Northern Irish and Scottish
research communities around a programme of
discussions that will focus on the themes of the
media, communication, nationalism, politics and conflict.

The main emphasis of this summer school is on
providing structural and individuated PhD-support
for European scholars, through a variety of
working forms, including feedback seminar and
lectures. The summer school aims to provide a
supportive international setting where doctoral
students can present their work, receive feedback
on their PhD-projects from international experts,
and meet students and academics from other countries.

Programme Content:
Stateless nations play an important role in the
new comprehensive political system, which has
enabled them to integrate into broader political institutions.

In a European framework that legitimises and
reinforces the State as the sole political player
with the ability to participate in the Union,
those regions with nationalist claims are seeking
to clarify their political future, satisfy their
aspirations (sovereignty or greater autonomy) and
become fully integrated in the supra-state structure.

Sometimes autonomous development is shaken by the
outbreak of violence, mixed inevitably with
anthropological, political, sociological and
communicative issues. Therefore, it can be
inferred that the study of these factors is of
key importance in the treatment and possible
resolution of violent or non-violent national conflict.

Taking four paradigmatic cases: Northern Ireland,
Scotland, the Basque Country and Catalonia, we
aim to share and discuss an experiential and methodological background.

The main aim of this Doctoral Summer School on
the Media & Nationalism is to propose an initial
approach to the realities of each of the
participants, examining the similarities and
differences from a multidisciplinary perspective and an academic standpoint.

Objectives and Thematic Areas (to be discussed in the lectures):
1. To establish an experiential background
through the description of the conflicts
represented here, with multidisciplinary papers
being presented by speakers from the participating universities
2. To create a theoretical framework that
will support the study of the four cases:
Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Basque Country and Catalonia
3. To establish a set of tools that might be
useful in resolving these and other conflicts
4. To discuss the role of the States
involved in these national conflicts: the United Kingdom and Spain
5. To evaluate the role of the media in the
treatment, escalation and resolution of these conflicts
6. To test the feasibility of implementing
inter-university working groups, derived from
common interests and divided according to subject areas

University of Vic, in the Faculty of Business Studies and Communication (FEC).

The working language of the Summer School will be English.

Procedure & Deadlines:
When applying, those interested in participating
should send the coordinators a Brief CV and
Academic Profile (maximum of 15 lines in length),
as well as an Abstract of their PhD project (no
more than 250 words), which should deal with one
or more of the following issues:
- The media and national conflict
- The media and identity
- The media and nationalism

Deadline for applications is 21th April 2008.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 28th
April 2008. Intending participants should enrol
between 28th April- 5nd May 2008 by completing
and forwarding the 'application form' to be found
on the Summer School website.

Students whose abstracts are accepted will be
asked to send a 10-page (3000-word) paper on
their PhD project as a whole. The paper should
identify the methodological, theoretical and
practical considerations on which he/she wishes
to receive feedback. (Deadline 13th June 2008).

Based on the abstracts and titles of other
student papers, participants will be asked to
choose up to 3 papers they would be interested in
responding to. These preferences will be taken
into consideration when drawing up Workshop Groups.

By the time of the Summer School (8th July 2008),
all participants will be expected to have
prepared a presentation (no more than 15 minutes
long) that describes the main points of their
work or those aspects they require feedback on.

Workshop Description
The Workshop will run for 1½ hours (8th July).
Papers will be divided by subject areas in such a
way as to maximise the value of the discussions of the lectures.

The Seminar will begin with a
discussion/theoretical debate covering the main
lines of work of the participants. Thematic
working groups will then be formed according to the content of each paper.

Each paper will be introduced by the Chairman.
Then, each participant will make a 15-minute
presentation of their research. Another
participant will respond to the paper, adopting
the role of 'opponent', discussing and/or
criticising the paper and its contents. Guest
academics and professors who are participating in
the day-congress will also be called on to take
part in the discussion of the paper.
