Children's Television:
 a glimmer of hope?

14th Annual Conference of the VLV Forum for Children's Broadcasting
with support from the British Board of Film Classification

Wednesday, 5th November 2008
 9.50am - 5pm (Registration 9.30am)
at The New Connaught Rooms, 61-65 Great Queen Street, Covent Garden, London WC2

A unique opportunity for you to meet, hear and question top speakers from the media, the regulators and academe on this vital topic.

The Voice of the Listener and Viewer's 14th annual Children's Conference comes at a crucial time for the future of children's television. Last year Ofcom's research drew attention to the public's support for children's programmes, not just on the BBC but on the other terrestrial channels, and concern that the supply of quality UK produced programmes had diminished.

Last month's 2nd Public Service Broadcasting Review from Ofcom highlights the problems and concludes that Ofcom's current powers cannot enforce provision of these programmes on the PSBs. It is evident that ITV1 will no longer be required to commission or transmit children's programmes, and although both Channel 4 and Five are interested in the area they lack the finance to replace the gap left by ITV.

Speakers at this VLV conference will include the politicians, the broadcasters, the regulators, the programme makers and the campaigners. The conference will also examine the policies and influence of the biggest name in children's media, Disney, and look at the problems of regulating the internet and video games.

The keynote speaker will be one of the best-loved children's presenters of all time, Floella Benjamin OBE, who is also a broadcaster, independent producer, and writer, and has been a member of Ofcom's content board.

Other speakers include:
John Grogan MP (Labour) Chair, All Party Parliamentary Group on the BBC
Ed Vaizey MP (Conservative) Shadow Culture Minister
Richard Deverell, Controller, BBC Children's Programming
Nick Wilson, Director, Children's Programmes, Five
Anna Home, Chair, Save Kids TV and Showcomotion
Nigel Pickard, Director of Family Entertainment, RDF
Huw Rossiter, Director of Communications, S4C
Janey Walker, Manager Editor Commissioning, Channel 4
Maggie Brown, media author and journalist
