Europeans sign up to al-Jazeera

Al-Jazeera, the Arabic-language television network, has
signed up an additional 4 million subscribers in Europe
since the conflict in Iraq began last Wednesday.   Before
the start of the war, al-Jazeera had around 35 million
subscribers with the vast majority located in the Middle
East, where the channel is broadcast for free.  In the last
week, overall subscriptions have doubled.  Al-Jazeera has
been at the centre of controversy over the media's coverage
of Iraq after its decision to broadcast footage of captured
American soldiers.  However, the incredible surge of
al-Jazeera's European subscriber base is perhaps an
indication of a growing dissatisfaction with the US and
European news media.  Al-Jazeera has not refrained from
showing footage that many news agencies have considered 'too
sensitive' to transmit.
