Vatican wants to play a greater role in the internet
----------------------------------------------------
Last week The Vatican released two briefs about the role of the internet
as a modern instrument for evangelisation and communication for the
Church. In these two papers, the Church shows an amazing understanding
of the Web and its many uses.

The Vatican will use the internet in an effort to bring "moral wisdom"
to what it considers a "marvellous technological instrument."
Demonstrating its understanding of communications in the new millennium,
the Catholic church said in a document called "Ethics in Internet," that
the internet has the potential to bring much good to the world, but that
"harm also can be done by its improper use." The church also said that
it wishes to play a greater role in spreading the gospel through the
internet.

In a second paper, unveiled last week and called "The Church and the
Internet," Pope Paul VI is quoted as saying that the Church may not fail
to use the media for evangelisation. John P. Foley, president of the
Pontifical Council for Social Communications, wrote it should not be
enough to use the media. It is also necessary to integrate the messages
into the "new culture."
