Mon Oct 13 16:36:07 GMT 2025
Rianne Subijanto is pleased to announce the publication of the new book,
/Communication against Capital: Red Enlightenment at the Dawn of
Indonesia
<https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501778667/communication-against-capital/#bookTabs=1>/ (Cornell
University Press, 2025).
This book serves as a key text for courses on media and social movement,
history of modern revolution, and history of imperialism and
colonialism. /Communication against Capital/ offers a historical
perspective on the importance of developing democratic means of
communication in struggles for social justice, with a particular focus
on de-westernizing modernity and the enlightenment.
Outside the academy, the book will also interest activists engaged in
questions of organization, mobilization, and the global history of
communism that fueled anticolonial movements across the Global South. It
provides policymakers with insights into the importance of democratic
communication for global social justice, contextualized through the
experiences and strategies of Indonesian revolutionaries in the 1920s.
The book invites readers in general to understand how global solidarity
took shape during the international communist movement in the early
twentieth century and how communication practices and technologies
became central to political organizing.
The fields of communication, media, and cultural studies are vital in
shaping the approach I use in this book. I hope that you, your students,
and your communities find it useful and inspiring.
