The book explores how citizen identities are constructed through 
everyday encounters—both mediated and embodied—with noncitizen migrants 
in the city of Athens, Greece. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and 30 
in-depth interviews, it develops a framework around four key interfaces: 
embodied encounters, mediated encounters, reflexivity, and crisis.
Bringing together media and communications, sociology, and urban 
studies, the book offers a micro-level analysis of identity-making in 
multicultural cities and interrogates the role of crisis in shaping 
belonging and exclusion.
