Publication of an immersive media production about migration.
We are pleased to share the publication of an immersive media production
about migration on the Meta Store. *Five Years Later* (2024) is an
immersive documentary that offers a six degrees of freedom (6DoF)
experience. It is also a hybrid media production that combines computer
generated imagery with real images filmed in 360º video and volumetric
video. It addresses the social issues of migration through the case of
the rescue ship Aquarius chartered by Doctors Without Borders. On June
17, 2018, this ship docked at the port of the city of Valencia (Spain)
with 629 people on board, who were rescued from drowning in the Central
Mediterranean. On June 24, 2023, the fifth anniversary of its arrival
was celebrated. This immersive documentary reflects on how their lives
have been during these five years in Valencian lands through the life
stories of two survivors: Mosses Von Kallon (president of the Aquarius
Survivors Association and recently awarded by the National Youth Award
in Human Rights) and Alhassane Diallo and his host family. It also
includes testimonies from two activists from the host society
(_https://casoaquarius.webs.upv.es/en/

*Five Years Later* is one of the outcomes of the *Immersive Prosocial
Audiovisual Narratives* research project, which aims to explore the
potential of immersive technologies as a new medium for storytelling
with a prosocial purpose. Thus, we seek to measure to what extent
immersive narratives are more effective than traditional ones in
promoting *prosociality*. We understand prosociality as a set of
responses (emotions, beliefs, attitudes, behaviours) that consider the
social benefit of others and the common good, characterized by their
other-oriented responses nature. Examples of these responses include
empathy, altruism, cooperation, collaboration, and helping, as well as
reducing prejudice and increasing positive attitudes towards those who
are different. Immersive Prosocial Audiovisual Narratives is a category
of what we call *Prosocial Audiovisual Narratives.* These narratives not
only denounce and bring attention to social injustices but also explore
solutions to inequality, prejudice, discrimination, stigmatization, and
hate speech or behaviour, approaching these issues from a positive and
prosocial perspective. Hence, this research project falls within the
necessary commitment of universities to adhere to the *2030 Agenda* by
taking into consideration the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and
promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This project is funded
by the Department of Innovation, Universities, Science, and Digital
Society of the Generalitat Valenciana, Spain (CIAICO/2021/258, 2022-2044).
