Thu Jun 13 16:34:45 GMT 2024

Liverpool University Press is pleased to inform you of the latest Open Access issue of /THE JOURNAL OF BEATLES STUDIES/<https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/journal/jbs>.

Published in association with the *University of Liverpool*<https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/arts/>, the journal is the first to establish The Beatles as an object of academic research, and publishes original, rigorously researched essays and notes, as well as book and media reviews.

Articles in the Spring 2024 issue<https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/toc/jbs/2024/Spring>address the ‘Hamburg period’ of the Beatles’ history; how the contemporary press has treated Paul McCartney’s recollections of how the Beatles became politically conscious in the 1960s; new perspectives on one of the Beatles’ most maligned recordings, ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’; and the role of leadership in underpinning the creativity and cohesion of the band.

The latest Across the Universe section provides an introduction to the work and ideas of French cultural theorist and commentator Pacôme Thiellement. This is a preface to a translation from the French of a key chapter from Thiellement’s book of 2002, ‘Poppermost: Considérations sur la mort de Paul McCartney’ [‘Poppermost: Thoughts on the Death of Paul McCartney’].

The issue closes with reviews of the latest books. Gina Arnold reviews ‘Blackbird: How Black Musicians Sang the Beatles into Being’ by Katie Kapurch and Jon Marc Smith, an important new work that examines the band’s relationship with black music; Marlie Centawer considers Deirdre Kelly’s ‘Fashioning the Beatles’; and Christian Lloyd reports on ‘Living the Beatles Legend: The Untold Story of Mal Evans/’/ by Kenneth Womack. Finally, Ben Winsworth reads James McGrath and Peter Mills’s edited collection ‘The Beatles in Perspective: A Carnival of Light’.
