[Commlist] G|A|M|E Games as Art, Media, Entertainment – Issues 8 & 9 publication announcement

Fri Feb 26 03:44:50 GMT 2021

We are pleased to announce the publication of two new issues of G|A|M|E Games as Art, Media, Entertainment. Issue 8, titled “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Video Game Agency” and edited by Ivan Girina & Berenike Jung, centres around the longstanding question of agency in video games. The issue aims to reconcile the complex conceptual and theoretical history of agency across fields such philosophy and social sciences with its current understanding in relation to digital artefacts. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this issue establishes new links between video game agency and areas such as new materialism, affect theory and platform studies.

Issue 9, “The Taboos of Game Studies” is edited by Kristine Jørgensen & Riccardo Fassone. What are the taboos of game studies, and is it even possible to identify taboos in a highly interdisciplinary field like game studies? And how are games and game studies tackling topics that are considered cultural or social taboos? This special issue is taking a stab at these questions, tracing both the disciplinary controversies of our field, as well as debating specific taboo topics and the theoretical and methodological approaches through which they have been addressed.
