[Commlist] New book about death, film and digital media
Thu Dec 17 12:25:33 GMT 2020
Framing Death. La morte in diretta, tra cinema e media digitali is
available from Bononia University Press, the first volume of the newly
launched Alphabet Series, through which the University of Bologna and
Bononia University Press enhance the theses of the Alma Mater’s research
doctorates.**
The book investigates the relationship between production and
consumption of audiovisual content considered “extreme” because it has
exploited, with a mix of cynicism and promotional skills, the occurrence
of death taken on camera.
By linking studies on cinema and digital media with research in the
field of thanatology, and by focusing on subgenres that have gone from
being banned objects to being considered cult products by specific niche
audiences, the book reconstructs urban legends that are still widely
circulated, as well as tragic events that mix crime news and documentary
cinema.
Starting from the origins of cinema, the book analyses promotional
strategies and the international critical reception of films that in the
past were censored and at the same time avidly collected. The study
considers the impact of technology and the dissemination of images of
death: from the Zapruder film to the birth of the so-called shock sites,
from the War Porn phenomenon to killers who maliciously use social media
to perpetrate their crimes. The research starts from one of the most
controversial questions: why are we fascinated by content considered
unacceptable and morbid? From snuff movies and shockumentaries to
certain manifestations of contemporary art, from the "necroculture" to
terrorism, this is a journey through the chaos of death in the digital age.
The digital Open Access version of the book can be downloaded free of
