Studies Journal]



Please pay attention to our upcoming Issue on “Cinephile Directors in 
Modern Times: When Cinema Interrogates Itself“, which will be published 
in L’Atalante. Revista de estudios cinematográficos (num. 18) (ISSN: 
1885-3730), a biannual, non-profit journal, published in Valencia 
(Spain) with the collaboration of several Spanish universities, and 
distributed in paper through Spain and Latin America, and worldwide 
through our digital version.

We cordially invite you to submit your manuscript to this special issue 
that will be published in English and Spanish in order to reach a larger 
audience.

Issue’s Aim

Although the idea of cinema discovering itself as a subject is not new, 
it is impossible to overlook the fact that in recent years there has 
been an increasing number of films that bring cinema into the frame, in 
an expression of a certain kind of post-modernity. This special issue 
seeks to focus on such films, which are the result of a process of 
reflection on cinema by filmmakers who are true cinephiles – directors 
who are fervent enthusiasts of their trade and who express their 
reflections on cinema in their filmmaking practice. In 1996, on the 
occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the cinema, Susan Sontag 
wrote her now famous essay titled “The Decay of Cinema”, in which she 
exposes one of the main features of cinephilia: a nostalgic approach to 
film history. This approach is itself related to intertextuality, the 
concept introduced by Julia Kristeva in 1967, drawing from Mikhail 
Bakhtin’s ideas about literary dialogism. Later, in 1982, in his book 
titled Palimpsests, Genette proposed the concept of transtextuality. 
Both concepts essentially refer to anything that places one text in 
relation to another. Also in 1982, Noël Carroll introduced the notion of 
allusion to refer to the cinematic practice which includes quotes, 
homages and recreations of classic scenes, shots, motifs, lines of 
dialogue, themes and gestures. Other related concepts include Frederic 
Jameson’s “nostalgia” and “pastiche”, and Vera Dika’s proposal of the 
term “recycling” to define the act of appropriation that filmmakers make 
of their film heritage. All of these notions are different ways of 
defining the practice whereby cinephile directors engage in a cinematic 
dialogue with those who have gone before them. In short, the aim of this 
special issue is to examine the practice of those directors who propose 
a metalinguistic approach to filmmaking, wherein cinematic creation is 
transfigured through a process of questioning its own nature. The 
purpose of this special issue is thus to tackle concepts such as 
metacinema, film within film, self-referentiality, self-reflexivity, 
intertextuality, allusion and mise en abyme from different perspectives. 
In an effort to narrow down this vast subject matter (because, as noted 
above, there has been a growing interest in such practices in 
contemporary cinema), the study will focus on films produced since 1995.

Publishing guidelines

What follows is an excerpt of the publishing guidelines. Those 
interested in them may visit the complete version in Spanish and 
English, and download the template for the submission of original 
papers, as well as an example of article, on the website 
http://cineforumatalante.com/publicaciones.html .

1. The length of original papers may vary between 4,000 and 4,500 words 
(25,000 – 35,000 characters and spaces).

2. Regarding the format, texts must be in Times New Roman font, have 
font size of 11 points and a justified alignment. The text must be 
single-spaced, without any kind of indentation and without additional 
separation between paragraphs. Title and side stories must be in bold 
type. Notes, if they exist, must be as brief as possible and will be 
included at the end of the text without using the automatic tool of word 
processors. These notes must be signalled with a superscript in its 
corresponding place (*); at the end of the text, under the heading 
Notes, the corresponding explanation for each note must be written after 
the number linked to it, in Times New Roman font with a font size of 9 
points.

3. Texts must come with:

-       An abstract around 120-150 words long (680-860 characters with 
spaces);

-       6 to 8 key words;

-       A curricular note of each author of around 60-80 words (350-570 
characters with spaces), where birth place and year of the author must 
be specified, as well as his or her profession, his or her current 
research line and published materials or recent works (if they exist).

4. Original papers may be sent in Spanish and/or English.

5. Italics must be applied only on foreign words, for emphasis on words 
and quotations of works and movies.

6. For textual quotations, guillemets, American and British quotation 
marks must be used in the following order: «...“...‘...’... ”...»

7. The first time a reference to a movie is made, it must be written as 
follows: Original Title (Director, Year).

8. Harvard citation system [(SURNAME, Year of publication: pages)] must 
be used in the body of the article. The complete reference must be at 
the end of the text, under the heading Bibliography, where the authors 
must be mentioned in alphabetical order considering the surname, 
according to the international bibliographic citation system APA 
[SURNAME(S), Name of the author (year of publication). Title. Place of 
publication: Publisher]. For the bibliographic citation of articles, 
book chapters, minutes or other textual and audiovisual materials, 
please check the complete version of the publication, available on the 
aforementioned website, several examples are also mentioned there.

9. Authors must provide images with a 300 ppi format (.jpeg, .tiff or 
.psd file) to the editorial staff to illustrate their articles. It is 
advisable to use 6 or 8 images to illustrate each article. L’Atalante. 
Revista de estudios cinematográficos will only accept images without the 
express authorization of the author or the publisher as long as they are 
already published works and that «their addition be carried out as a 
citation, in order to produce an analysis, commentary or critical 
judgment», according to article 32 from Spanish Law 22/1987, written on 
November 11th, on Intellectual Property. The publication of images will 
be carried out on didactic or research purposes only. The source and the 
name of the author of the work mentioned must be specified in the corpus 
of the article and/or the caption. The author of the article who wants 
to reproduce a copyrighted work is held responsible of previously 
requesting permission to reproduce it.



Information of our Journal

This journal comprehends the most diverse topics in the contemporaneous 
audiovisual field, acting as a vehicle of expression both for 
professionals and theoreticians. It is aimed at those whose work, 
research or interests are somehow related to the focus of the magazine. 
At least 80% of the documents published in it are original articles. In 
order to spread researches carried out by other institutions and 
countries, 50% of the papers come from authors outside the publishing 
entity. Besides inside checks, L’Atalante employs external assessors in 
its evaluation system of peer review.

L’Atalante is indexed in different catalogues, directories and 
databases. Internationally, it appears in the Thomson Reuters 
(Philadelphia, USA) Art and Humanities Citation Index® and Current Art 
and Humanities®; in Latindex (Regional System of On-line Information for 
Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and 
Portugal); and in the Library of Congress (Washington, USA). In Spain it 
is listed in the CSIC database of Social Sciences and Humanities 
Journals ISOC; in the bibliographic website of Hispanic scientific 
literature DIALNET; and in REBIUN (Network of University Libraries). 
L’Atalante belongs to the group A (gA), formed by the scientific 
international journals of the greatest level, according to the 
Clasificación Integrada de Revistas Científicas [Integrated 
Classificaction of Scientific Journals] (CIRC, Spain).
