[Commlist] Call for Chapters: "Understanding Generative AI in a Cultural Context: Artificial Myths and Human Realities"

Sun May 26 22:17:34 GMT 2024

Erkan Saka started a project with graduate students that is becoming an edited volume. With an ethnographic sensibility, they are conducting research and collecting case studies on generative AI usage in different fields. The volume will be interdisciplinary, but communication and media studies will play a central role, so scholars here are more than welcome. No payment from the authors will be required.

This edited volume, "Understanding Generative AI in a Cultural Context: Artificial Myths and Human Realities" explores the nuanced interactions between artificial intelligence (AI), cultural dynamics, and communication practices within the digital landscape. The publication will offer a multidisciplinary examination of how generative AI technologies are reshaping the contours of digital life, focusing on how these technologies are influenced by cultural contexts and how they, in turn, influence cultural and communicative practices. The collection will feature diverse methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives, ranging from empirical studies to theoretical analyses, to understand the interplay between AI and cultural phenomena comprehensively. An ethnographic sensibility will cover all approaches and methods used.

The book has four primary objectives: 1. Informing Policy and Practice: The insights provided will be valuable for policymakers and practitioners as they navigate the ethical, cultural, and communicative implications of AI technologies, offering grounded data and analyses to inform better regulatory and implementation practices. 2- Enhancing Public Understanding: This volume will also play a crucial role in educating the general public about the operations and implications of artificial intelligence in daily life. The book will help readers gain a more nuanced understanding of AI's role in shaping contemporary culture and communication by demystifying how AI technologies function and are integrated into cultural and communicative practices. It aims to bridge the knowledge gap between AI experts and the general public, fostering more informed discussions and opinions regarding AI's ethical and societal impacts. This increased awareness will empower individuals to critically engage with and respond to the rapid developments in AI technology that influence their social environments and personal interactions. 3. Advancing Theoretical Frameworks: By integrating theories of communication and cultural studies with AI technology studies, the volume will contribute to developing new theoretical frameworks that account for the role of technology in society. 4. Fostering Interdisciplinary Collaboration: By bridging disciplines such as cultural studies, communication, sociology, computer science, and media studies, the book will encourage the cross-pollination of ideas and methodologies.
