[Commlist] Call for Contributions: Outside the System - Southern & Eastern Documentary Production

Wed May 15 10:08:47 GMT 2024

Call for Contributions:

Outside the System
Southern & Eastern Documentary Production

Edited by: Max Schleser, Swinburne University of Technology

This edited collection captures documentary productions in the proximity of the Eastern and Southern Hemisphere. Outside the System explores documentary making in various facets and forms at the tangents of institutions and screen industry with a focus on social and creative innovation in documentary storytelling and beyond.

While documentary scholarship is a burgeoning field of research, very few books focus on the contributions of documentary theory and practice to art, culture and the screen industry in the Southern and/or Eastern Hemisphere. Documentary in the screen industry takes the US and Europe as a point of reference when considering film festival premieres, broadcast contracts or film markets. While the screen industry and funding opportunities in Australasia, Asia-Pacific and Latin America are limited, documentary production is growing exponentially and making contributions to art and culture.

Using the regional specificity as a starting point for this edited collection, documentary makers, creatives and scholars explore the documentary ecology outside the mainstream. With a focus on non-traditional practices, emerging media and community engaged documentary approaches, Outside the System opens up the ongoing conversation about the definition of documentary.

The edited collection will feature three sections (including 12 chapters, six case studies and reports):

- Documentary systems of production, dissemination and exhibition (inside and) outside of the screen industry: Creative practice research at universities, independent producers and organisations, institutions in the GLAM and non-profit sector.

- Social Innovation: The voice of the marginalised communities in documentary.

- Creative Innovation: Transformation in documentary storytelling through AI, vertical video, micro and mobile cameras, smartphone filmmaking and XR.

The edited collection will include chapters, reports and case-studies. Some of the reports will allow filmmakers and screen producers, as Creative Arts researchers, to critically reflect on their work, and some case-studies will outline NTROs (Non-Traditional Research Outputs) produced at various universities in the Southern and/or Eastern Hemisphere.

The Swinburne University of Technology Documentary Research Group is located in Melbourne, Australia. In addition to contributors from Swinburne University, we seek contributions from scholars, creative arts researchers, filmmakers and screen producers in the Global South and Australasia.
