Film, and Literature *

Abstract Deadline: *May 31, 2024*.
We are seeking chapter proposals for an interdisciplinary anthology
themed around Mothers, Mothering, Horror and Terror in Television, Film,
and Literature. When we use the term mothers, we are referring to anyone
who self-identifies as a mother and/or engages in mother work. The
anthology will consider and explore the ways in which mothers,
motherhood, mothering, and mother figures are identified, constructed,
represented, appropriated, interpreted, and/or (dis)embodied in horror
and/or terror in film, television, and literature.
*Scope*
This is an interdisciplinary anthology with transnational and
multi-cultural perspectives and contributions are encouraged from a wide
range of disciplines and fields. Disciplines might include psychology,
sociology, communication, anthropology, women’s and gender studies,
queer studies, cultural studies, literary studies, popular culture
studies, and all social science and humanities. Creative contributions
highlighting themes of mother(hood)s in horror and/or terror, such as
fiction, poetry and art, will also be welcomed alongside academic
writings. Non-fiction, creative, and academic contributions from those
with lived experiences of being an Indigenous and/or racialized,
LGBTQIA2S+, refugee, criminalized, and/or immigrant mother are highly
encouraged to partake and share their unique perspectives.
*Submissions* might include academic essay, personal essay/reflection,
graphic narrative, memoir, creative non-fiction, diary style, poetry,
art, photography, multimedia, and hybrid genres. Topics within the scope
of this anthology may include but are not limited to:
● mother(ing) and care (giving) roles
● politics of care
● personal care circles
● abject and monstrous mothers, mothering, motherhoods
● archetypes of good vs. bad/evil mothers, mothering, or motherhoods
● transcendent depictions of mothers, mothering or motherhood (beyond
good/bad; gendered and sexual binaries; biology)
● maternity and female reproductive horrors (eg. body horror, pregnancy,
miscarriage, abortion)
● medicalized/pathologized mothers, mothering or motherhood (eg.
Munchausen by proxy, psychopathy, postpartum depression)
● contagion, virus, and infected mothers, mothering, or motherhoods
● non-human mothers (eg. robots, AI, animal/human hybrids)
● traumatized and traumatizing mothers, mothering, or motherhoods
● mother-child relationships and dynamics
● matricide and infanticide
● migrant / migrating / cross-border mothers, mothering, or motherhoods
*Submission Procedure*
Please submit a proposal which includes the following: title, 300 word
abstract, and a short 100 word biography for each author. Proposals
should be written in English, using Microsoft Word format, Times New
Roman 12 font. Please submit all proposals by the submission deadline of
*May 31, 2024*.
Authors of accepted proposals will be notified and sent submission
guidelines. Chapter contributions will be 5000 words, excluding figures,
tables, and references. Creative submissions will:
●Creative non-fiction, memoir, diary style, graphic narrative, personal
essay/reflection should not exceed 5000 words
● Poetry: max. 5 poems of max 40 lines each, 12 point Times New Roman font.
● Photography, artwork, multimedia and hybrid genres: max 5 pieces,
.JPEG or .PNG, in high resolution. An artist statement (100 words max)
may be submitted with each piece, but it is not required
*Project Proposed Timeline*
1. Proposal submission deadline: May 31, 2024
2. Notification of acceptance: June 30, 2024
3. Full 1st draft of chapter due: Oct 1, 2024
4. Editorial review results returned: Nov 15, 2024
5. Final chapter submission: October 31, 2025 7.
