[Commlist] CFP: Expanding the margins: International Conference on Design Research
Wed Apr 03 16:31:46 GMT 2024
Call for Papers:
EXPANDING THE MARGINS. International Conference on Design Research
4-5 December 2024, Barcelona
Organized by Information and Communication Science Studies and
Mediaccions research Group (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya)
*** Deadline: April 15, 2023***
*Presentation and topics:*
Design and research are doubly intertwined: while research is inherent
to design as a professional activity, academic research must accompany
its development as a discipline. some authors broadly agree with the
description of the three typologiesof research conducted in design
(Frayling, 1995). Thus, research about design(Cross and Findeli 1999) is
approached from historical, cultural perspectives, semiotics, etc.,
while research for design(Dorst, 2008; Friedman, 2003; Roth, 1999;
Sanders 2008) is situated within design projects and at any of their
development phases. Finally, research through design(Jonas, 2007;
Findeli 1995) is conducted using design and its methods to achieve
results that can contribute to both design and other disciplines.
On the other hand, research and design can be aligned with a purpose
producing the modalities of “design for” (social and climate justice,
citizen participation democracy, etc.). This field of action is marked
by social science methodologies: media studies, anthropology and
sociology of design, STS, etc. Consequently, research is situated at a
fertile intersection of disciplines.
In this conference, we aim to delve into the richness and diversity of
approaches to design research, as well as its potential to face the
challenges of contemporary society. We encourage expanding the margins
of design by submitting research initiatives related to the following
lines (not limited to them):
*
Design and new political scenarios: design, citizen participation,
and social justice.
*
Design and professional activity: creativity, cultural narratives,
employability, and/or precariousness.
*
Design and academia: teaching experiences in design and/or the
trajectory of the researcher in design.
*
Design, graphics, and image: defining visual culture in physical and
digital spaces
*
Design, visualization, and information: the role of design in
scientific dissemination.
*
Design in the peripheries: practicing design from unconventional
spaces.
*
Design and climate crisis: approaches, reflections, and/or solutions
regarding the role of design in the face of the climate crisis.
*
Design and its gaps: occupying empty spaces in the narrative of
Western design (gender, postcolonial, class).
*
Design, health, and well-being: contributions from the practice of
design.
*
Design and present futures: technologies, methodologies, and
imaginaries.
Participation formats
You can participate in the conference by delivering an
oralpresentation(communication) or a poster. Proposals might be
submitted in Spanish, Catalan, and English. Additionally, the
organization may consider other presentation formats after the
evaluation of all the received proposals.
Communications
Paper abstracts must be submitted directly using the form
<https://forms.gle/x6pA9o55BUqKnF2bA>. The extension of the abstracts is
500 words and must include: the research question/objectives of
research, theoretical references, methodology used, and (if available)
some results.
Posters
We offer total freedom in the design and format of the poster, with a
maximum size of A2. Posters must be sent in pdf format. They must also
include objectives, methodology, and references.
Submit your proposal through this link
