Our Program
The Department of the Arts, University of Bologna, in collaboration with Brown University, Dickinson College, The University of Michigan, The Ohio State University, and Wesleyan University, invites applications for the 2024 “Mediating Italy in Global Culture” Summer School. Scheduled to take place in Otranto, Apulia, from Sunday, June 9th to Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, this intensive course offers a wide-ranging learning experience specifically designed for graduate and post-graduate students.

The program aims to fortify participants’ theoretical and methodological competencies while fostering intellectually stimulating discussions on the production, distribution, circulation, and reception of Italian cultural and media products. These discussions will explore diverse global contexts, including the United States, the UK, the European Union, the Mediterranean, the Global South, with a particular emphasis on the pivotal role played by these regions in shaping Italy’s representations worldwide.

Over the years, this intensive program has endeavoured to explore various forms of media representations associated with Italy through lectures, seminars, and roundtable discussions focused on specific topics and case histories. Active participation has always been encouraged, with students presenting and discussing their research alongside our international faculty. Dedicated Q&A sessions, as well as individual and group activities, are also organized to foster interaction and interdisciplinary exchanges throughout the course.

The program will cover a range of themes, including Italian cinema, Italian television, digital platforms and media, Italian literature, and graphic novels. Specifically, this year’s activities – organized in partnership with the University of Salento, the Apulia Film Commission, and the Municipality of Otranto – will concentrate on the intricate images associated with the Mediterranean aspects of brand Italy in films, TV series, digital media, music, and food cultures. Visits and cultural activities will include a tour of the Aragonese Castle (which inspired the first gothic novel in history, "The Castle of Otranto", written in 1764 by Horace Walpole), and Otranto’s local institutions and artistic communities.

Costs
The cost of tuition and supplementary activities is 100 euros.

The fee does not include travel arrangements and accommodations. However, accepted students will benefit from accommodations at reduced rates. Additionally, this year, partial funding may be available to provide financial assistance, contingent upon the number of selected applicants. As Otranto is a popular tourist destination, applicants will receive prompt notification of their acceptance, allowing ample time to make all the necessary travel arrangements.
