Fri Feb 02 16:13:34 GMT 2024
‘Monitoring Mediascapes for Democratic Communication in Europe’, in
Brussels on 15 February 2024. *

*
With the conference we are marking the end**of**the 3-year project
Mediadelcom <https://www.mediadelcom.eu/> - the most comprehensive study
of its kind done in Europe identifying the risks and opportunities for
deliberative communication in today's polarized Europe.
*Mediadelcom,* financed by Horizon 2020 and coordinated by the
University of Tartu, Estonia, has been examining various aspects of the
media in 14 European countries to determine the risks and opportunities
for deliberative communication. Mediadelcom argues that European
political and cultural spaces evolve best if specific policies enhance
the conditions for deliberative communication. The project has developed
a methodology to detect the risks and opportunities that determine the
news media’s ability to provide necessary information, as well as
influence the electorate’s engagement in deliberative communication. The
findings highlight areas of concern for media practitioners, policy
makers and the public. Mediadelcom provides valuable information in the
context of implementing EU media-targeted regulations, including the
European Media Freedom Act. The results also tackle some of the major
challenges facing the media, such as accountability, access to
information, literacy, polarization. Mediadelcom involves 17 teams
representing 14 EU countries, from Western as well as Central and
Eastern Europe.
The event includes project findings and recommendations as well as a
roundtable and panel discussions.
