Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona)

December 2-4, 2024

*New deadline for abstracts submission: October 4, 2024*

Keynote speakers:

- Carmen Peña Ardid (Universidad de Zaragoza)
- Jo Labanyi (New York University)
- Kathleen M. Vernon (Stony Brook University)
- Vicente J. Benet (Universitat Jaume I)
- Sarah L. Thomas (Brown University)

This conference will take place from 2 to 4 December 2024, at Pompeu Fabra University (Poblenou Campus, Barcelona). It aims to open new avenues of thought about the cinematographic star system in Spain, and, particularly, about the actresses' role during the Spanish Transition. This initiative is part of the research project Production of new subjectivities in female characters and actresses: Spanish cinema from the end of the dictatorship to the post-transition (1975-1992) (REF: PID2021-124377NB-I00). To this extent, the aim is to gather specialists in Spanish cinema history and Star Studies methodologies to discuss the role of female stars such as Ángela Molina, Victoria Abril, Ana Belén and Carmen Maura, among many others, in the political, social and cultural transformation processes since the end of the Franco regime. We are interested in the normative models inside the industry, as much as in the possible contradictions, transgressions, and alternatives that the actresses generated both on and off the screen. Moreover, we are interested in the possible elements of creative subjectivity that actresses played in the configuration of their roles as stars, as well as in the development of the characters they played.

After an evaluation and selection process, the committee will accept proposals that address any of the following research lines in relation to Spanish cinema after the end of Franco's regime and to actresses as an object of study: 1. Building of the cinematographic star in Spain. Industrial and advertising strategies in the consolidation of female stars.
2. Creative subjectivity of the actress in her Star Image and Screen Image.
3. Comparison between stardom in Democratic Spain and foreign models of star system. 4. Comparison between stardom in Spanish Transition and other periods of Spanish cinema history, as well as other cinemas that underwent similar processes of transformation or change of political regime.
5. From the theatre scene to the cinematographic screen.
6. Voice, body and gesture as a statement of the interpretative personality.
7. The diverse representations of women in relation to work, class, family, sex, love, gender-based violence, and civil rights.
8. Actresses and female archetypes.
9. Female star's reception.
10. Foreign female stars in this period.
11. The actress as a channel for female desire.
12. Interpretive schools and cinematographic stardom.
13. Supporting actresses.
