Call for papers:

*Special Issue on Artificial intelligence and digital media ecosystems*

Telecommunications Policy (Elsevier)

The Special Issue accepts papers addressing historical, theoretical, or practical (business and policy) aspects of AI’s impact on the media ecosystem and creative industries.

*Special issue information*:

The digital media ecosystem has, for over 20 years, been experiencing a process of extensive technological adaptation and change. AI is the most recent technology to affect the digital media ecosystem, causing unprecedent disruptive change across all aspects of the digital media value chain. Current applications like generative AI have led to concerns about their impact on IPR, as well as how cultural diversity and authenticity can occur. Ethical concerns around the use of AI have also emerged, relating to issues such as deep fakes, disinformation, and the traceability of content.

The impact of AI on the ecosystem involves the emergence of new actors and the alternation of existing ones, triggering new and diverse interactions across the value chain. These changes call for regulatory efforts and new governance patterns, with demands for improved transparency and accountability. Concurrent developments within the European Union (Digital Services, Media Freedom, and Artificial Intelligence Acts) may well indicate the interdependences of tech and media players.

The impact of AI on the media ecosystem calls for investigation in a number of areas. Journalism and news media are torn between adopting AI and the challenge it pauses for news credibility, while advertising companies may utilise AI to create value through personalisation while addressing its impact on privacy. And videogame companies may utilise AI to personalise games or enhance player experiences.

Thus, this special issue seeks contributions that explore the relationship between AI and digital media and creative industries. Contributions can be qualitative or quantitative, addressing historical, theoretical or practical (business and policy) aspects of AI’s impact on the media ecosystem and creative industries.

We invite contributions related to but not limited to:

  * Historical review of AI research and its impact on digital media and
    creative industries​• Analysis and research on the impact of AI in
    media production and media workflows
  * Analysis and research on the impact of AI in media business models,
    with emphasis in monetization strategies, distribution models and
    revenue streams.
  * Analysis of the role of AI in the sustainability of emerging
    AI-driven media business models.
  * Analysis and research on AI based social and/or sustainable
    innovation in the media ecosystem.
  * Systematic and or comprehensive review on the implications of AI in
    copyright and intellectual property related regulation
  * Ethical and regulatory aspects of AI in the media sector
  * Content and media related public policies in the European and
    national contexts.
  * Research on the impact of AI in the user generated content ecosystem
    and the popularization of “AI assisted creativity”.
  * Theoretical and empirical background on AI and content consumption,
    media reception and policy, social or approaches to digital media
    content usage.
  * Analysis and research on the interdependence between technology
    players and media industry players in the context of integrating
    AI-based solutions.
  * Studies on the interdependences between regulation and policy in the
    technology sector and in the media sphere.Research on AI-driven
    disinformation from a business and/or techno-economic ecosystems
    perspective.

*Manuscript submission information:*

TheTelecommunications Policy <https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/telecommunications-policy>’s submission system will be open for submissions to our Special Issue*from September 15th, 2024*. When submitting your manuscript to Editorial Manager, please select the article type “VSI: AI & digital media ecosystems”.*Please submit your manuscript before February 1st, 2025*.

All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Once your manuscript is accepted, it will go into production, and will be simultaneously published in the current regular issue and pulled into the online Special Issue. Articles from this Special Issue will appear in different regular issues of the journal, though they will be clearly marked and branded as Special Issue articles.

The journal does not require APC for regular articles. TP only chargesAPC for full open access.
