Call for Papers - *Digital Transactions in Asia V *
*Conference and Workshops, 21-23rd February 2024, *Quy Nhon, Vietnam
*Hosted by: */The International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and
Education Research /
*In Partnership with: */University of Queensland, University of Sydney,
Nanyang Technological University, Concordia University, De La Salle
University, RMIT University, Monash University Malaysia, Ateneo De
Manila University/
*Theme: ***
The Asian region is passing through a period of unprecedented social and
economic change, and digital transaction platforms operate at the centre
of these processes. Transaction platforms take a number of forms,
including point of sale payment apps, money transfer services, trading
platforms, micro credit apps and the multi-faceted exchange mechanisms
built into retail, service and social media platforms. Together, they
constitute a larger ecology of digital exchange that has enabled the
rapid growth of online commerce, network economies and e governance
across the varied political, cultural and economic geography of the region.
This conference addresses multiple dimensions of this new phase of
mediation, where Internets operate as transactional architecture for
social transformation. The scale and scope of digital transactions is at
its most acute in Asia, as the location of the world’s digital majority,
a leader in fintech applications, and a diverse region where
digitization has long been synonymous with national and transnational
development ambitions. Innovations in transaction architectures, chains
and tokens has been integral to the rise of Asia's super platforms,
allowing them to play a pivotal role in the transformation of everyday
labour, consumption and sociability across the region.
In adopting digital systems, local communities and users adapt
transactional affordances in line with their own environments, means and
norms. As a consequence, the embedding and acculturation of digital
transactions is a critical factor in the digital transformation in Asian
societies, making culture a key determinant of transactional
relationships. In our first post-COVID physical conference,/Digital
Transactions in Asia V/seeks to take stock of the acceleration of
digital transactions during and after the pandemic, exploring the many
ways in which everyday fintech has made lasting changes to the social,
cultural and economic landscapes of Asia. We invite paper submissions
from researchers across all disciplines working on the past, present and
future of Digital Transactions in Asia.
*Special Session on Gendered Transactions:*/Digital Transactions in Asia
V/will feature a special focus section on Gendered Transactions. Gender
constitutes a critically important dimension of the ownership, design
and utility of transaction platforms, and manifests powerfully in the
everyday transaction chains emerging within the digital economy. As much
as policy discourses on financial inclusion take an explicitly gendered
approach to social development and economic empowerment, the
actually-existing digital economy demands close and critical attention
to the gendering of digital labour, consumption, innovation and the
embedding of transactional logics in sociability, families and community
structures. We welcome submissions on this theme for our focus section.
